an evening with CHICAGO

a letter from a golfing buddy - Memories are best when shared -

DEAR LARRY................THANK YOU FOR INCLUDING ME ON YOUR LIST FOR THE VERY SPECIAL AND SENTIMENTAL  CALENDAR THAT I RECEIVED YESTERDAY. IT WAS INDEED A TRIP DOWN NOSTALGIA LANE TO LOOK BACK ON  ALL THOSE STARS YOUR FAMILY BROUGHT TO US OVER THE YEARS.

THE AERIAL VIEW OF THE ORIGINAL TENT WAS ALSO A BLAST FROM THE PAST. I REMEMBER THAT TENT. I ALSO REMEMBER WHEN ROUTE 2 WAS A TRUE TRAIL, EITHER THE BEGINNING OR THE END, DEPENDING ON WHETHER IT WAS SUNDAY MORNING OR EVENING, OF THE ROAD TO THE BEACH, LONG BEFORE 95 OR ROUTE 4, AND BEFORE ALL THE CRAP GRADUALLY APPEARED TO CLUTTER AND SPOIL THAT ROAD. NOW IT'S A NIGHTMARE, AS DIFFERENT IN CHARACTER AND SERENITY AS NIGHT AND DAY.

BACK IN THOSE DAYS, MY OFFICE MANAGER'S GOOD FRIEND, AND MY PATIENT, WAS A LOVELY WOMAN WHO RAN THE TICKET OFFICE. I WOULD CALL BETTY DOLBEY AND REQUEST TICKETS FOR A CERTAIN SHOW, AND SHE ALWAYS CAME THROUGH..... WHEN "CHICAGO" WAS MAKING AN APPEARANCE DURING THEIR COMEBACK TOUR, BETTY GOT ME FRONT ROW SEATS AND I WAS DAMN NEAR DEAF FOR A WEEK AFTER JUST ABOUT BEING ON STAGE WITH THEM.

THEN THERE WAS THE WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON SHE CALLED ME AND ASKED IF I WOULD SEE A  MEMBER OF A BAND THAT WAS PLAYING THAT NIGHT AND THE DRUMMER HAD SOMETHING IN HIS EYE. I SAW THE MAN, REMOVED THE OFFENDING PARTICLE AND WAS REWARDED WITH COMP TICKETS FOR THAT NIGHT'S GIG. MADE ME FEEL LIKE I WAS PART OF A SPECIAL TEAM.

AND OF COURSE IT WAS A SPECIAL TEAM,  A SPECIAL TIME,  IN LITTLE OLD RHODY. THE TENT IN WARWICK, THE THEATRE IN MATUNUCK............. WHAT WAS BETTER THAN THOSE SUMMERS?......... BACK IN THE DAYS WHEN PEOPLE RECOGNIZED AND APPRECIATED QUALITY AND CLASS.

WELL,  ENOUGH OF THAT. I JUST HAD TO ACKNOWLEDGE THAT VERY SPECIAL LABOR OF LOVE THAT YOU SENT OUT. I WILL SHARE IT WITH MANY OTHERS. THANKS AGAIN, LARRY. HEALTHY AND HAPPY HOLIDAYS TO YOU AND YOUR FAMILY. AND, IF NOT BEFORE THEN, I'LL SEE YOU NEXT SPRING WHEN THE GRASS IS SOFT AND GREEN, AND THE PUTTS ARE TRACKING TOWARDS PAYDAY.................BEST REGARDS...............TOM LEDDY

an evening with JUDDS( - FAREWELL TOUR)- & Michael Johnson

7/27-7/28

VIP pass was for their final show in Tenn. - I was very proud to be an invited guest
In the history of music there is only a few times that I can remember that a parent and their sibling became famous – though it was not at the same time. Some examples include: Hank Williams, Sr. After his death, his son, Hank Williams, Jr. became well known in his own right. There was Nat King Cole and his daughter, Natalie. John Raitt and his daughter, Bonnie. It was a very different story, though, for one music duo, Naomi and Wynonna Judd. When the Judds came out on stage together they were dynamite. With such hits as “Love Can Build a Bridge,” and “One Man Woman,” The Judds filled the Warwick Musical Theatre when they came to town. Even later, after Wynonna went solo, fans remained loyal and devoted. And she gave them everything they expected in live entertainment, and much, much more. The ‘Tent’ had a round, rotating stage, something that was very unique in the business. No matter where you sat, you always had a good seat – with a view.  When the Bonoff Family was introduced to The Judds, it was through a booking agency that represented such renown talent as Roy Clark, Mel Tillis and The Oak Ridge Boys, to name a few. When The Judds were still complete unknowns in country music, this agency told us that we had to have Naomi and Wynonna perform, at least as an opening act - they were that great. Back then, the duo was known as “Momma and Baby Judd.” Over the years, Naomi and Wynonna became close friends with me and my family and performed at the Bonoff theatres in Arizona and Rhode Island on numerous occasions. Wynonna, who many have come to know and love for her “rebel” side, even rode her Harley Davidson side by side with me on more than one occasion. Its true what some people say, “You can take the girl out of the country, but you can’t take the country out of the girl.” The same can be said about The Judds. They were true southerners, praising god, always hospitable, and toughened by adversity in life. We got along very well. Before mother and daughter split as a duo, I was invited to attend one of their farewell concerts in Tennessee in 1991. They had built a great deal of trust in me and the Bonoff Family, so much so that The Judds let me book a year and a half of farewell tour dates. Then,  after Wynonna went out on her own, I made sure that this incredible talent would return to the Warwick Musical Theatre, signing her up to play at the ‘Tent’ her first year as a solo act. I knew Wynonna would have an outstanding career in country music all on her own, and I wanted to be a part of it from the beginning.  One of my favorite mementos of their visits is a photo of Naomi and Wynonna together inside their tour bus – a mother and her kid, smiling. Well, I was in the photo, too. But that’s only because I was asked, and no matter how prominent the talent that performed at the Warwick Musical Theatre – my parents always taught me never go somewhere unless you’re invited. A tour bus is like a large home on wheels, and The Judds gave me the opportunity to spend some time on their “front porch,” if you will, and just chat like regular folk. That’s what I’ll cherish most, how kind and giving they were – happiest, I think, when they made music together.
