When John Loves Mary starring James Garner

My mother is smiling in this picture. Not an unusual sight. But she’s got a bear hug on James Garner, one of her personal favorites. He was a hunk all right, and mom didn’t miss a beat. Jim, the star of the 1960s TV show, Maverick, had also established himself as an accomplished performer on the wide screen in westerns and dramas, including “The Great Escape” opposite Steve McQueen, not to mention his many credits on Broadway. Jim was a “man’s man” – good looking, smart, tough, ready for action. As a child I can remember sitting on the end of my parent’s bed on a Sunday night watching Jim’s show on TV (Maverick), filled with amazement that here was one of the heroes of every kid’s fantasy world at that time, now suddenly appearing face to face in reality whenever he made a stop at the Warwick Musical Theatre. The Bonoff Family loved playing host to Jim Garner. We were blessed that he enjoyed performing summer stock on our stage and will never forget the wonderful memories he left for us, and our many customers over the years.
